Riverton Parke Junior High School won first place among Class 4 schools on Tuesday, November 5 at the Junior Division Indiana Academic Spell Bowl area contest at Woodrow Wilson Middle School in Terre Haute.
\r\nFive schools competed in the Panthers’ division, and RP’s 38 points won over North Central JH, Rivet MS, and Parke Heritage MS. RP was led at the area contest by eighth grader Emma Thomas’ near perfect score.
\r\nThe contest is sponsored each year by the Indiana Association of School Principals (IASP). Junior high spellers studied a list of 1,625 words; nearly 2,000 students participated state-wide in the competition.
\r\nThe Panthers were coached by English teacher Lisa Harmon. She said, “A big congratulations goes out to all of the students for their hard work, dedication, and contributions to the spell bowl team. Although we did not score enough points to make it to the state competition, I am extremely proud of their efforts and their 9th place ranking in the state.”
