After visiting a local diner and learning about jobs within a restaurant, Riverton Parke’s Applied Careers and Exploration class was very interested in working with food. All of the students worked diligently to complete an online course to become ServSafe Certified Food Handlers. This certification is valid for three years and would enable them to work in a restaurant for a summer or part time job. In addition, the students wanted a chance to practice preparing and serving food and came up with the idea of having a baked potato lunch fundraiser. The RP teachers and staff were sent a Google Form to place their orders. Thirty-five orders were received! The students went shopping at Sam’s Club for the ingredients. Throughout the week, the students prepared the toppings and potatoes. Student Couper Kersey said, “I liked scooping the sour cream.” When speaking of the experience, student Ayshia Oldham said, “I really liked delivering the food and getting compliments.” The students had a lot of fun with their fundraiser and want to do another one soon.
